Bittersweet Results

Nov. 5th, 2008 | 08:24 am

Well the election has come and gone and I can truly say I was stunned by the results.  Obama swept into White House with a massive electoral victory, and even managed to pick up two southern states, Virginia and North Carolina, an achievement that should be noted.  Excitement and dare I say the cliche, hope, filled my night for what will come.  But setting that aside I have to look at some of these results further.

Some of the polling data still seemed to be skewed pre-election.  I mentioned that he won Virginia and North Carolina, but looking at the margins, the polling indicated significantly larger margins than appeared last night, particularly in North Carolina where he has just won by several thousand votes.  Now that could simply be due to some errors on behalf of the polling agencies, but questions as to the root cause, voter misrepresentation, cannot be swept aside.  I can't rule out that some measure of race still caused voters to misrepresent their vote choice to pollsters, based off of preconceptions of race, whether they are known or unknown.  I am heartened that he still managed to win two staunchly southern states, and he came within 5 points of Georgia, something quite unimanagable in recent years.  When the NES data comes out it will be interesting to see.  The pollsters should be congratulated though, as I did not see any other discrepancies last night in the results, so kudos to their efforts since the last elections to improve their methodology.

And then there were the state ballot propositions.  I can't say how disappointed I am with these results, both for my current state, and across the country.  California, Florida, and Arizona all amended their constitutions to ban gay marriage.  We are going to look back on the last several years of these stripping of rights with great shame, that in the 21st century we still cannot recognize those as different, as still deserving equal rights.  Arkansaans even decided that any unmarried "partners" cannot adopt a child.  As they have already denied gays the right to marry in their state, they now strip them of a right out of completely illogical fear.  I'm completey stupefied.

Not all of the ballot prop news seems grim though.  California and South Dakota both shrugged off attempts to limit abortions in very uninformed ways, with South Dakota a state ban, and California, a mandatory waiting period and notification for parents.  Michigan chose to allow stem cell research to receive funds in a way similar to California's proposition 4 years past.

And thank god!  The senate's now slim Republican minority held on to 40 seats, or it at least seems that way.  Bypassing the minority is never productive for the country and Obama would do well to remember his winning coalition expanded beyond the traditional base of the Democratic party and his legislative efforts should reflect those voters.  And hopefully the Republicans won't become obstructionist, though that is still preferable in my opinion to a completely one party government.

Huh.

Oct. 28th, 2008 | 01:07 am

I just watched Being John Malkovich.  Jesus Christ that was a trip and a half.  I'm really glad I don't have any existentialist questions.  Because if I did, so not the movie to watch.

Also something I just noticed in a typo, if you do not capitalize christ the good folks at live journal feel you have misspelled the word :) I'm not sure why that amuses me.

I want the RNC to spend $150,000 on my wardrobe.  I'm almost as qualified as Palin so I think they should seriously consider the option.

I haven't been this entertained by a political snafu in a loooong time :) Way to not help yourselves Republican Party.  Seriously, who thought this was going to play well?

Harrumph. The job fair at school was massive.  I was a little blown away by the sheer number of recruiters and I smiled a little bit at the benefit (see one of the few) of attending such a large and somewhat reputable school. And then I noted how many were actually hiring political science majors. 6.  And 4 of those were just trolling for interns. Eep.

There were many companies hiring "all" majors which is code for not using your education and jumping into the business world.  Which I'm not averse to.  But I'd like to see if I could actually start my career off with something I enjoy doing rather than being forced into employment out of necessity.

Economy, get your shit together. I need a job in a few months or rather I would like to quit my college one and get a real one sooner rather than later.  I cannot emphasize enough how much more ass sooner than later will kick. Yeah, that made sense.  Boo to Chick-fil-A and working with children and adults who never quite left adolescence.

But on the upside this is making me reconsider a more rapid entry into grad school...again...for the 17th time.  I'm ok with being indecisive about this.  It's kind of integral to the rest of my life though I do need to get quite a bit closer to a decision and at the very least schedule the big 'ole GRE.  Sac State is probably going to be it as it is the only near-ish university that offers the two programs I am interested in and I'm ok with that, though I am still a little worried about my gpa.

Aah well, there's always something running around up there but I can't remember a time when I've been juggling so many concerns before.  I'm sure most soon to be college grads go through the same thing.  All I can say is that graduation will be quite awesome, irregardless of my eventual and forthcoming decision for employment or immediate entry into grad school.  More to come soon, with hopefully a little more certainty and decisiveness.

I must be getting jaded with the sheer length of this political season but I have never been happier for the presidential debates to finally be over and done with. I think that barring some vast polling error, such as a magnification of the Bradley effect, Obama seems set to become the next president.  The state to state electoral math stands in his favor, though he has consistently over polled with white voters in the primaries, and I remain concerned that this affect may be underestimated in the current polls.  That said the senator still has several ways to easily surpass the magic number of 270 electors, though all of them require him to win predominantly white states that leaned to Bush in '04, all of which he currently leads.

However McCain still has three weeks left, though his last performance was strong, he failed to land any true knockout punch on Obama.  He doesn't have many options left to catapult himself into the lead so in my estimation he almost has to rely on ground efforts voter enthusiasm, two areas that conventional wisdom dictate, grossly favor Obama.  That said in a political cycle that has seen the resurgence of the underdog and the fall of the chosen candidates, I'm not calling anything until November 5th :)

Things Not to Do

Oct. 5th, 2008 | 11:25 pm
mood: pensive pensive

So I'm a pretty big cynic or can be.  I manage to detach myself from most situations, or at least have that ability for better and worse.  I don't get emotional very easily, again, for better and worse.  But it most crisis and stressful situations I have a pretty calm head.  I have a 1001 hobbies and interests that I can lose myself in. But these proclivities of mine failed pretty spectacularly when I was watching the Mad Men episode tonight that highlighted certain health issues that my grandmother has, and a fate my dad now has.

My grandmother on my Dad's side had Alzheimer's when she died, which if you have never experienced it, can knock you in the gut with a sucker punch.  One minute everything is fine.  They are just who you've always remembered them as.  And the next someone you have known for years and loved mistakens you for your uncle they grew up with.  Well at least my dad won't have that to look forward to, though that is a relatively black hope I have for I wish he was going to live long enough for that to be a real concern.

Maybe this still speaks powers of Mad Men that it affected me so much.  All other things equal, it's a damn fine piece of entertainment.  Superbly written, directed, and acted, wildly entertaining and clever.  But tonight it didn't offer me any kind reprieve, though other wise I've been fine the last few days. MRI's and treatment schedules come down the pike this week, so hopefully good or at least better news will accompany them.

And for those of you who haven't tried it, curry officially kicks total's ass as the breakfast of champions. though I'm pretty sure total can't give you heart burn...totally worth it.

And my new glasses rock. Seriously, they may have replaced my Le Creuset as my favorite possession. And yes previously my favorite possession was in fact a big pot. Albeit a big fancy red one. But Peter Parker's got nothing on these :)  Though considering his were always super simple that's maybe missing my target, the point of which: they are awesome.

Contemplating Employment Options

Sep. 30th, 2008 | 04:10 pm

Blargh! On top of $140 in books for one class, I also had to buy a $135 piece of statistical analyzing software. Blargh! I am getting into the wrong racket.  Clearly I should open a college bookstore somewhere. And after getting up at 6:45 to run, this has been a damn long day. It's going to be a damn long quarter...that will either result in me getting in phenomenal shape or becoming addicted to caffeine :)

So if you happen to need some regression analysis done...Im your man...as soon as I learn how to use this software.

A Manic Weekend

Sep. 30th, 2008 | 03:55 pm
mood: exhausted exhausted

Well this weekend came and went, but did not leave me unmarked.  I witnessed and cherished my sister’s happiest of days and can say without hesitation, I have never been happier for one of the most loved people in my life.  My sister, the new bride, will be the first and only bride on an entire side of family with no shortage of cousins and our family turned out with joy and enthusiasm.

And there was dancing and drinking and more drinking.

And I got to see so much of my family that I have missed for years, second cousins who I held years ago are now up to my hip.  Aunts and uncles updated me on their lives, and I told them about my many lucrative career options (teaching).  it really was a phenomenal weekend in that sense and I realized I really need to get my ass out to St. Louis again.

Cody, my new brother-in-law, I believe realized how lucky he truly is and if he did not I surely saw it clear as day when my sister walked down the aisle, arm in arm with our father, a peerless beauty.  I've never seen her smile so much in my life.

But I mentioned mania in my title, and what went up, also came down.

And this same weekend, centered upon the man who gave my sister away, our 62 year old dad.  After my wet and dark arrival at the Myrtle Beach International Airport and a nights sleep, the apprehension that had been building in me over the past week and a half exploded the following morning when I learned just how bad his diagnosis was.  Stage 4.  Two little words shattered my hopes of seeing my favorite person for decades to come.

He will most likely not be attending my wedding, and sadly, may not even get to meet my future bride, a fate he ironically would share with his own father.  This fact remained centered in my mind, as silly as it was amidst the torrent of questions expected of a single sibling, “When are you next?”

I answered politely, but I all could think was, “Not soon enough.” Yeah I know, it's so emo if owned grass it would be cutting itself. But it was kinda crappy news.

So this weekend had dizzying heights! I have a cool brother in law and my sister was positively glowing, which is kinda cool.
And my dad’s diagnosis is kind of numbing.

More Insightful Surveys and a Trip to the ER!

Sep. 24th, 2008 | 08:42 pm

Can you take this witho
ut deleting any questions?
- People really delete questions on a survey? Come on folks, sarcasm isn't that difficult.

Name 3 thoughts you have at this exact moment?
- The cut on my hand itches...but this sure as hell beat getting stitches.
- McCain's proposal to delay the speech really is a fantastic idea politically, but it seems like it might be falling on its face from the comments of a very cynical constituency.
- I really really hate pink ties. Damn you Jessica.

What's something you really want right now, be honest?
- I want to know how I'll do on my polisci exam. I think I'll ace it but I won't know until I take it, which won't be until Monday...but I'd still like to know...

Three feelings at the moment?
- Curious, amused, and excited.

Does anything hurt on your body?
- My hand doesn't feel super right now but slicing into it with a box cutter is bound to do that.

Who was the last person to disappoint you?
- Me. I didn't apply myself enough last quarter during the upper div english and I didn't get the A's I could have obtained with relative ease.

Do you still talk to that person?
- As long as I don't answer my own questions, I think it's ok.

Who was the last person you had a deep conversation with?
- A coworker asked me what I meant when I used the term spirituality. And then he started to proselytize. This is why I don't like talking about religion. Just let me believe what I want to.

What are you listening to right now?
- Anderson 360 on cnn. He actually makes me want to have white hair. And if my dad's genes have anything to say about it, that's a distinct possibility :(

What's your biggest regret
- Not getting more involved in school and performing to my full potential. I feel like I've closed some doors to myself that I know my abilities would allow me to walk through otherwise. But well life happened, I didn't always stay focused, but I'm still happy with where I am and what's ahead of me.

Do you like horror movies?
- I like really good horror movies that are super creepy. And also really cheesy, campy ones :)

Where were you at 2:00 this morning?
- Not playing Madden '09....I was in the middle of a draft!......What?

What are three things you look for in bf/gf?
- An adventurous spirit, someone willing to try something they wouldn't necessarily choose to do themselves. There's so much in the world I want to see, taste, here, and do, and it would be great to have someone along for the ride with.
- Someone who wants to talk about things! I love conversation, about all subjects, but especially ones that don't focus on starlets, celebrities, and 20 '' rims.
- Someone feisty and maybe occasionally a bit bratty. I enjoy banter. I like someone who can be...challenging as long as they realize that means I push back :)

What's your favorite part about being in a relationship?
- Not having to think wistfully about how nice it would be to have one again when reading stupid questions like this? But my favorite part is definitely having that one person who knows you inside and out, for better and worse.

What are 3 things that melt your heart?
-  A girl who may not know how to cook but is willing to learn :)
- My family, yes it's generic, but it's still true.
- Crazy Indian cults looking for sacred stones in a mine staffed by kidnapped children.

Where's the weirdest place you've changed?
- The front seat of my car in the first parking spot of the movie theatre.

Do you wear glasses?
- Glasses and contact lenses. I've shifted back between them a few times but I think I am finally done with the lenses. They are just too much of a pain in the ass?

Who do you love?
- Friends and family.

What's the cd in your player?
- I have 311's Soundsystem in my cd player/alarm clock.

Who was the last person to make you cry?
- Wow, well I'm not sure how long ago it was but uh well the only person who can make me cry, myself.

Anybody you're looking forward to seeing soon?
-  My family! I can't wait to see everybody at the wedding.

Is there a particular friend that you miss?
- All of them.

What is your underwear color?
- White with vertical blue stripes

Anywhere you'd rather be right now?
- Myrtle Beach to help with the wedding or London.

Are you going anywhere for the next summer?
- Since I will have some money to spend and no class, you betcha.

Do you have plans today?
- Polishing off my remaining netflix before I pack.

Are you waiting for anyone's call right now?
- Not particularly, but I never really wait around waiting for a phone call. if I get one, great. If not, m'eh, I can entertain myself.

Will you call them if they don't call?
-If we have plans?

Would you kiss your ex?
- Sure, kissing's fun :) Granted we've already figured out we don't work as anything but friends, but a little lip locking never hurt anyone ;)

Have you ever had your heartbroken?
- To put it mildly, yes.

Do you believe there are certain circumstances where cheating is ok?
- Under no circumstances. If you've fallen out of love with someone, you owe it to them to tell them that instead of sneaking around and causing a lot of unnecessary hurt. But a more important question would be, what someone considers cheating which for me...is probably anything past kissing.

Are you missing any body right now?
- More family and friends are never bad.

Do you want kids?
- Once I have my career kicked off, yep! I'd love a couple of 'em.

If yes how many?
- Anything greater than one, but no more than three. I'd like to have some time alone with my wife at some point again ^.^

Would you Consider Adoption?
- I'm not sure. I could never do it if I had kids naturally since I don't think it would be fair to them, since I'm pretty sure I would always favor my own kids. But if for whatever reason I can't/don't have kids, yeah I'd adopt.

What will you name your kids?
- Something that won't get them pummeled on the playground.

If someone likes you would you want them to tell you?
- Even though I've never had a problem telling someone this, yeah it'd be nice to hear its mutual :)

Do you want someone you can't have?
- I used to, now I just want to find someone who clicks.

Do you believe in celebrating Anniversaries?
-I do but my brain tends to forget when they are...

Do you love anyone so much that you can't explain it?
- Eh, i'm pretty good about explaining why I love people, though the bond me and a few of my friends share is pretty cool. As is the ones with my family :)

Who are your last 4 texts from?
-  Sven, Andrew, Randy, Manda,

Where was your default picture taken?
-It's an icon made from a particular Joss Whedon series that kicked ass.

- George

What's your current favorite color?
- Seafoam green!

Does your crush like you back?
- It would be nice, but eh.

What is your current mood?
- Excited, can't wait to get on the plane and see everybody.

When is your birthday?
-may 13.

What color shirt are you wearing?
-Work clothes, though a nurse complimented my tie while I was in the er, which was kind of cool.

If you were going on a Reality TV show, which one would it be?
- I know it's not still on, but Win Ben Stein's Money, was awesome.

Are you imagining anyone naked right now?
- Eh, not so much. But I'm a guy so ya know, give me a minute.

Did you ever sneak into an R rated movie?
- Despite looking really young, I've never been challenged or id'd.

- Not living up to my own expectations.

Do you want to see somebody right now?

Who would you do anything for?
- Family and friends.

What did you do today?
- Went to work, went to the er, and yeah. That's about it.

Ameri
can Pie or Superbad?
-
Superbad, though the next person who tells me I could pass as McLuvin, is gettng hit. in the face.

Do you believe in love at first sight?
- Eh, I think there are people out there meant for each other, but I think that develops over time.

Would you ever take one of your ex's back?
- Not so much, but not because she isn't awesome, but because our awesomeness tends to cause us to want to hurt each other..

What did you do last night?
-played Madden WAY too fucking late.

What was the first thing you said this morning?

- I wasn't really thinking about it until now, but yeah, that'd be kinda nice.

Ugh I'm too fucking tired now to finish this post and actually say how my day was. Suffice it to say fingers and box cutter blades do not in fact mix. But glue instead of sutures is awesome :)

So There's This Economy Thing...

Sep. 22nd, 2008 | 10:50 pm
mood: contemplative contemplative

Oh my god this thing still exists? I have a sudden urge to fill out surveys and talk introspectively about my day and feelings. Must fight urge.

So instead of talking about my day, I will comment about something that has been on my mind, the economy. Yeah, yeah. I know, not the sexiest of topics, but there has been a lot going on that merits discussion. We bailed out Bear-Stearns. Fannie and Freddie were taken over. So was Aig. And now there is a comprehensive bailout plan in the offing. And all of these meltdowns occur amidst high inflation, rising unemployment, and foreclosures left and right. So what does all of this mean?

Well the financial sector of the economy, particularly the investment banking sector embraced greed, risk, and poor judgement while regulators were either through a lack of power or will, failed to respond, and together have positioned the US tax payer in a rather difficult decision. The proposed bailout mainly focuses on purchasing bad debts and mortgages from banks, whose returns are less than guaranteed. The more bad debts we purchase, the stronger the banks will become, and thus stabilize the economy.  However in buying these debts, we will spend hundreds of billions of dollars. That's a big chunk of change. And it's a lot to think about. We will eventually get a return on some these mortgages and debts, but the exact return is unclear, so lest you be persuaded otherwise, we are not losing all this money. But it still adds to the deficit and debt, which is I believe now hovering around 11 trillion dollars, but that's for another day.

Now that Secretary Paulson and the rest of the administration have offered up a bailout, some Congressional representatives have begun the hopefully brief and effective negotiations. But this is interesting to me. The Bush economic doctrine has largely shied away from governmental involvement in the private sector, though one could argue that this lax attitude may have catalyzed the current situation. And the proposed bailout will definitely involve a very active federal government, something diametrically opposed to general Republican views on the economy.  Senator DeMint, a notably very conservative Republican from South Carolina has already voiced what I expect to be a talking point by many Republicans in Congress, and may signify yet another area where the Bush administration finds opposition within its own party. But unlike such areas, like immigration reform, this isn't a subject that can be ignored, particularly as it backs right up to an election cycle. So legislation will be passed. The quality of the legislation remains to be determined, as does who will primarily benefit from it.

Just thinking about it all, and you should be too. More on that later. But if you understand the situation better than I or just have a strongly held belief write your Congressmen and Senators. And I stress the word write, don't email. It does make a difference.

Shop till you Drop

Nov. 25th, 2005 | 11:20 pm

Well this morning I made my first forray into the madness that is early bird shopping on Black Friday and it was incredibly successful. I can't post everything I got as some of you are recieving christmas presents but what I did get for myself was:

a PNY flash drive, a 75/25 spindel of dvd-r/cd-r, and minority report

Then I really cleaned up at Express. Two dress shirts, a tie, a sweater, and some nice black slacks. And the free gift. For $107. It was quite nice.

Then I went to work. Ugh. Very tired. But feeling very successful. All of my Christmas shopping is done, except for a few small items here and there.

All said and done, today the damage was $473.00...but I'm getting like $150 in rebates from best buy :D

Ugh. This weekend sucked. Not entirely, but nearly.

Didn't get anything done on my research paper like I intended to and now I have two of them to finish for next week, one for monday, the other, tuesday. Not going to be fun. Hopefully I can knock about a page off of each one a day and then do a big push all sunday. Hopefully. Might not have alot of time on Thursday for stuff like Thanksgiving....

Also got into a fight with my dad and he just walked away from the phone leaving me to talk to my mom. I dont like doing stuff like this because he stews and sulks and this was completely out of my control. -,-

Also can't forget about work. Oh how I wish I could, but no, it's always there.

Upsides of the weekend:

Harry Potter was incredible and fulfilled all of my expectations even though it hacked and slashed the book. There might even have been some raping with an eraser at some point.

And I made sheppard's pie. It was really good. Like really good. Me and manda polished it off in one night good. I think I could get back into the swing of cooking :)

as mentioned earliar i found my leatherman! I gave up on finding this ages ago. It had somehow become magnetized and had attached itself to a stud in the sofa, so that I never found it on the ground. Sweet. Upside is I know have an extra set of keys which I actually kinda need.

Also after some consideration I realized I was a bit harsh (see comment) in my last post. I was hurt and as in the tendency for posts when hurt, when a bit overboard. And ya know you did have a fairly good excuse....just check your phone! Well apologies.

Also if anyone is interested, I am going to japantown next thursday if I have it off. All interested parties can apply here. Sorry pete :(

Spit is also one damn fine card game and I suggest you learn it.

mood: crappy crappy

Wow it's been awhile. Well one big super update I suppose. Here's what I've been up to besides work and school.......
............
............

Oh right. And no those dots do not denote sleeping.

In other news I did get to vote recently and was happy that all of the initiatives I voted No on were defeated. Huzzah for democracy I suppose. The Dems did well all around the country, keeping 2 governorships and pushing forward a number of measures. They did however lose some ground in Texas where a state constitutional ban on gay marriage was approved. But hey, it's Texas.

Also started writing in something known as NanoWrimo which is a writing event, 50k words in one month. Not gonna happen but I have explored and written some ideas that I've had for quite sometime.

Let's see there was something else of note but it is escaping me with ease right now. Aah well it'll come back. I also read something really good a while backc but I cant remember the name of the book or the author, I just remember enjoying the hell out of some novel. God I need to work less. 38 hours this week.

nothing to see here. move along. edited.

mood: stressed stressed

Ugh yesterday sucked. I had to drop my speech class because I slept through a speech and I refuse to get anything less than an A in that class. It was a long time in coming because I wasnt sure if I could but I realized because there was another assignment tied to that speech, there was no possibility. :( So that had me in a bad mood.

Then I got to work.

Long story short is alot of things went wrong yesterday and I ended up getting out at 11:15. It suckethed.

And today I bombed my constitutional rights test. I think. All of the numerous free speech vs. national security cases blended together, as did the obscenity cases. This has been a crappy couple of days and I am really hoping I can still pull out an A in that class.
